In a gesture that might ease maritime tensions, Pakistani authorities have released 22 Indian fishermen from the Malir Jail in Karachi. They were freed after completing their sentences, according to a report from The Express Tribune, which quoted Malir Jail superintendent Arshad Shah. The fishermen are expected to return to India on Saturday.

Faisal Edhi, head of the Edhi Foundation, organized transportation for the fishermen to Lahore. From there, they will continue their journey to India. Remarkably, the foundation covered their travel expenses and provided gifts and cash to the released fishermen.

Edhi emphasized the need for humane treatment of fishermen who inadvertently cross into foreign waters due to vague maritime boundaries. Stressing the hardships their families face during detainment, he called for their immediate release post-sentence and quicker repatriation through official channels.
