Manipur Civil Society Calls for Dialogue on Weapon Surrender

The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) urged Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to engage with local youth leaders for a cooperative approach in recovering looted and illegally held weapons. They argued that the seven-day surrender deadline is too short for effective engagement and public cooperation.

In light of the recent appeal by Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla for civilians to surrender illegally held weapons, the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has voiced concerns over the effectiveness of the seven-day deadline. COCOMI has requested a more formal engagement with local youth leaders to ensure a collaborative process in recovering the arms.

The committee stated that more time is needed to properly engage with all stakeholders and the public, emphasizing the necessity for transparency and communication. They acknowledge the surrender as a legal step needed but highlight the circumstances that led to arms looting, blaming government security failures during crises.

COCOMI also demands that no legal action be taken against those compelled to defend their communities and calls for transparency in arms confiscation reports. Additionally, they urge a shift of armed Kuki militant camps under the Suspension of Operation agreement to restore law and order, and demand a comprehensive government plan to secure and protect vulnerable villages.
