As the world marks the third anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, New Zealand is taking further steps to support Ukraine and hold Russia accountable. Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced today a new set of sanctions targeting 52 individuals and entities associated with Russia's war effort, as well as an additional $3 million contribution to Ukraine's recovery and reconstruction.
Expanded Sanctions to Weaken Russia's War Machine
The latest sanctions aim to disrupt key aspects of Russia's military-industrial complex and energy sector. They also target individuals and entities involved in the forced relocation and re-education of Ukrainian children, as well as those linked to North Korea's military support for Russia.
"Russia's illegal invasion has caused immense suffering to Ukraine's people, widespread environmental destruction, and severe damage to critical infrastructure," said Mr. Peters. "New Zealand remains committed to supporting Ukraine and holding Russia accountable for its actions."
New Zealand's Continued Financial Support for Ukraine
In addition to imposing sanctions, New Zealand will contribute a further $3 million to the World Bank-administered Ukraine Relief, Recovery, Reconstruction and Reform Trust Fund. This initiative provides essential funding to help Ukraine maintain government services, provide humanitarian relief, and rebuild key infrastructure.
Since the Russia Sanctions Act was enacted in March 2022, New Zealand has imposed sanctions on more than 1,800 individuals and entities, alongside extensive trade restrictions, travel bans, and export controls.
New Zealand's actions align with international efforts to apply economic pressure on Moscow while supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and long-term recovery.
