Supreme Court Dismisses Plea to Regulate Internet Prices

The Supreme Court refused a plea to regulate Internet prices, citing the free market and multiple service options. The bench suggested that allegations of market control by Jio and Reliance should be taken to the Competition Commission of India, allowing the petitioner statutory recourse.

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea seeking regulation of Internet prices within the country. The bench, led by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna and Justice Sanjay Kumar, dismissed the plea filed by a petitioner named Rajat. They pointed out that consumers have multiple Internet service options at their disposal.

During the hearing, the bench observed the nature of the free market and mentioned alternative Internet service providers like BSNL and MTNL as examples of available consumer choices.

While the petitioner alleged that companies Jio and Reliance control a significant portion of the market, the bench recommended seeking recourse through the Competition Commission of India for such claims. They clarified that the petitioner is free to pursue any appropriate statutory remedies.
