The Russian rouble surged to a five-and-a-half month high against the U.S. dollar on Monday, closing at 87.90 in the over-the-counter market, an optimistic sign as the Ukraine conflict reaches its fourth year.

PSB bank analyst Denis Popov attributes the strengthening to a combination of improved U.S.-Russia relations under President Trump, enhanced exporter activity, and the potential removal of geopolitical premiums. Despite recent sanctions from the EU, the rouble's performance against both the dollar and China's yuan has been noteworthy, gaining 23% and 12% respectively this year.

Though the rouble remains down about 10% since the onset of the Ukraine crisis in February 2022, experts like Russia's Economy Minister Maxim Reshetnikov suggest the currency is stronger than anticipated. Current data, including Dollar/rouble futures on MOEX, underscores the rouble's resilience, with the central bank setting the official exchange rate at 88.17.
