Indian Fishermen's Dramatic Escape from Oman Unveiled

Three Indian fishermen, fleeing alleged mistreatment in Oman, were intercepted by security forces near St Mary’s Island. Using a basic GPS, they covered 3,000 km to reach India. Upon verification, they were confirmed as Indian nationals. They are in judicial custody after being charged under maritime laws.

Three Indian fishermen have been taken into custody after being intercepted by the Indian Coast Guard and Coastal Security Police off Malpe coast. With their origins traced back to Oman, they reportedly fled mistreatment and managed an arduous 3,000 km sail using a basic GPS device.

The fishermen, who hail from Tamil Nadu, were intercepted near St. Mary’s Island on February 23. Locals alerted the authorities about a foreign fishing vessel, Shattaf Launch Manufacturing, leading to their arrest. The men were charged under Indian maritime laws, confirming their nationality and employment in Oman.

Preliminary investigations point to their escape due to withheld passports and denial of basic needs by their employer. While security concerns were dismissed, the local fisherman who reported the vessel will be honored. Currently, the fishermen are remanded in judicial custody in Udupi.
