In a swift intervention, authorities in Thane district, Maharashtra, have successfully stopped the wedding of a 16-year-old girl to a 24-year-old man. The incident unfolded after the child welfare department in Pune received an anonymous tip-off, leading officials to thwart the ceremony at Ulhasnagar on Monday.

Rushed to action by the call, the Thane district child welfare officer, Ramkrishna Reddy, revealed that officials arrived at the marriage venue amid an assembly of family and guests. Upon investigation, it emerged that the minor's father, battling a serious illness, had hastened the wedding plans.

A case has now been initiated under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act against the groom, his family, the girl's parents, and the officiating priest. The young girl has been placed in a remand home, ensuring her protection following the halted marriage proceedings.
