A Hong Kong court has sentenced Lam Cheuk-ting, a veteran democrat, and six other men to several years in prison for their roles in the 2019 riots. The sentencing comes in the aftermath of a violent incident on July 21, 2019, when over 100 white-shirted men stormed the Yuen Long MTR station, attacking bystanders and journalists with clubs and sticks.

While twelve of the white-shirted attackers were convicted of rioting and conspiring to wound with intent, Lam and his fellow defendants were also charged with rioting and inciting violence. The veteran democrat, a prominent member of the Democratic Party, had previously claimed self-defense, asserting that they were trying to protect themselves and others from the mob.

However, district court judge Stanley Chan dismissed the self-defense argument, leading to their sentencing. The ruling is a significant development in the ongoing legal proceedings connected to the widespread pro-democracy protests that rocked Hong Kong four years ago.
