The European Court of Human Rights has determined that Cyprus neglected its legal duty to investigate a British woman's 2019 allegation of gang rape by Israeli tourists. The incident allegedly happened in Ayia Napa, a popular resort on the island.

Initially, the woman, 18 at the time and identified as "X," reported being raped by Israeli youths. She later retracted her statement following prolonged interrogation without legal counsel, claiming she did so under duress. She faced charges of "public mischief" with a suspended jail term. The ECHR's ruling confirms Cyprus's failure to properly address her allegations.

Following her retraction, the accused youths returned home without prosecution. Despite Cyprus's Supreme Court overturning her conviction in January 2022, citing undue pressure, the attorney-general has not reopened the investigation, prompting continued legal and public scrutiny.
