A Tunisian national, Brahim Aouissaoui, was handed life imprisonment without parole in France for the violent killing of three people at a basilica in Nice during a 2020 assault tied to Islamic extremism.

At 25, Aouissaoui was found guilty of terrorist murder as well as attempted murder. During his trial in Paris, he acknowledged his actions, attributing them to a desire to avenge Muslims globally. Despite claiming memory loss of the event, evidence showed he attacked the victims with a knife on October 29, 2020, while shouting “Allahu Akbar.”

The Nice attack was part of a series of incidents in France that year blamed on Islamic extremism, leading to heightened security across the country. Occurring amid the trial of perpetrators of the 2015 Charlie Hebdo attacks, it fueled further international debate over France's stance on free speech and Islamic radicalism.
