A glacier burst has left at least 47 people feared trapped in India's Himalayan state of Uttarakhand, according to local media reports on Friday.

The catastrophic event occurred near Chamoli, a region close to the Badrinath temple, a significant religious site attracting hundreds of thousands of devotees annually. Roughly 57 workers, involved in road construction in a strategic area adjoining Tibet, were trapped, as stated by senior police officer Nilesh Anand Bharne to news agency ANI, partially owned by Reuters.

"Ten workers have been rescued and evacuated to an army camp near Mana village in critical condition," Bharne reported. Rescue efforts to reach the 47 entrapped workers are hindered by heavy snowfall, as indicated by another senior official to ANI.
