Vanuatu Moves to Revoke Fugitive Lalit Modi's Passport

Vanuatu's Prime Minister has ordered the cancellation of Lalit Modi’s passport amid his attempts to dodge extradition. Interpol has rejected alerts against Modi due to insufficient evidence. Modi, former IPL head, is wanted in India for alleged embezzlement and currently resides in London.

In a decisive move, Vanuatu Prime Minister Jotham Napat has instructed the Citizenship Commission to revoke the passport issued to Lalit Modi, the former IPL founder. This action stems from revelations of Modi's alleged attempts to avoid extradition by acquiring Vanuatu citizenship.

The Republic of Vanuatu's official release highlighted that Interpol has twice declined to issue an alert notice against Modi because of insufficient judicial evidence. Had such an alert been issued, it would have led to the automatic rejection of Modi’s citizenship claims by Vanuatu.

Modi, who surrendered his Indian passport in March, has been living in London since leaving India in 2010. He is wanted by Indian authorities for his alleged role in embezzling large sums during his leadership of the IPL. This situation underscores the Vanuatu Prime Minister's stance that citizenship must be pursued for legitimate purposes, not to escape legal consequences.
