KZN Education MEC Praises Police for Major Drug Raid at Fairvale Secondary School

MEC Hlomuka expressed strong condemnation of criminal elements infiltrating educational institutions and putting learners at risk.

In a significant crackdown on illegal activities within schools, KwaZulu-Natal Education MEC, Sipho Hlomuka, has commended the South African Police Service (SAPS) for their swift and decisive operation at Fairvale Secondary School in Wentworth, south of Durban. The large-scale raid, conducted on Friday, resulted in the confiscation of illegal substances, sharp weapons, and large sums of cash, reinforcing the province’s commitment to ensuring safe learning environments.

The operation, which involved over 60 police officers, was launched following escalating reports of drug-related activities and violence within the school premises. The search and seizure operation yielded a variety of contraband, including vapes, cigarettes, sharp scissors, pocket knives, pain medication, and an assortment of unidentified pills. The discovery of cash raised further concerns regarding potential drug transactions occurring within the school grounds.

"We will not idly stand by while drugs and illegal activities threaten the safety and education of our children. Schools must be places of learning and development, not havens for crime and delinquency. This operation sends a strong message that we will not tolerate lawlessness in our schools," Hlomuka asserted.

The Education Department has pledged to collaborate further with law enforcement to ensure ongoing safety measures are implemented in schools across the province. This includes random searches, increased security presence, and intervention programs aimed at educating learners about the dangers of substance abuse and criminal activities.

Hlomuka also called on parents and guardians to take an active role in supervising and guiding their children.

"We ask that parents be intentional about ensuring that their children stay away from illegal substances and any criminal activities. The safety and well-being of our learners require a joint effort between the department, law enforcement, and families," he emphasized.

Community leaders and school officials have welcomed the initiative, urging continued cooperation between all stakeholders to safeguard learners from negative influences. The police have assured that ongoing intelligence-driven operations will be conducted in various schools across the province to root out any elements threatening the educational sector.

Authorities are now investigating the source of the confiscated drugs and cash, with potential arrests expected in connection to the operation. The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has reaffirmed its commitment to working with law enforcement agencies to curb school-related crime and create a secure learning environment for all students.
