The Ministry of Earth Sciences Secretary M Ravichandran inaugurated a cutting-edge urban testbed and aerosol observatory at SRM Institute of Science and Technology in Chennai on Wednesday. This state-of-the-art facility, valued at over Rs 60 crore, is established by the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune.
Equipped with approximately 15 sophisticated instruments, the observatory is designed to track nearly 50 different types of atmospheric data. These include weather patterns, wind flow, aerosol particles, and temperature variations. Such integration is expected to significantly improve the accuracy of weather forecasts for the public.
Ravichandran emphasized that this facility would not only forecast everyday weather more precisely but also provide vital short-term data on global warming in the region. These insights will be instrumental in understanding and researching long-term climate impacts.
