Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis admitted in the assembly on Tuesday that the norms regarding loudspeakers at places of worship are not being effectively enforced. He stressed that action will be taken against responsible police officers if any lapses surface.

The guidelines dictate that loudspeakers should only be used between 6 am and 10 pm with strict decibel limits of 55 during the day and 45 at night. Fadnavis noted that the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, not the police, currently has enforcement authority, and called for legislative changes to bolster the police’s role.

Highlighting the need for stricter adherence, Fadnavis referenced Supreme Court guidelines requiring places of worship to secure permits before installing loudspeakers. Decibel meters have been distributed to police to ensure compliance, and violators would face restrictions and revocation of permissions.
