U.S. Envoy's Mission: Securing Elizabeth Tsurkov's Release

Adam Boehler, U.S. Special Envoy, has intensified efforts to secure the release of Israeli-Russian researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov, missing since a 2023 Iraq trip. Tsurkov is held by Iran-backed militia Kataib Hezbollah. Boehler's negotiations involve trading Hezbollah members for Tsurkov's freedom, underscoring the case's urgency with Iraqi leadership.

In a determined diplomatic effort, Adam Boehler, the U.S. Special Envoy for Hostage Affairs, has amplified initiatives to secure the release of Israeli-Russian researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov. Abducted during a research trip to Iraq in 2023, Tsurkov's continued captivity has drawn both national and international concern.

Boehler recently visited Baghdad, meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, affirming the U.S.'s stance on the issue. Tsurkov is reportedly held by the Iranian-backed Shiite militia, Kataib Hezbollah. In exchange for her release, negotiations include the possibility of releasing six Lebanon-based Hezbollah members.

The Biden administration had previous limitations given Tsurkov's non-American citizenship. However, under Boehler's leadership, the Trump administration is exerting pressure, emphasizing the urgency as the second anniversary of Tsurkov's abduction approaches. Secretary of State Marco Rubio is also involved, directly addressing the case with Iraqi officials.
