The Punjab Assembly witnessed a significant uproar over the recent removal of three jathedars by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). Lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties united against the decision, describing it as a move that 'hurt every Sikh.'.
State cabinet minister Harjot Singh Bains highlighted the gravity of the issue during Zero Hour on the final day of the budget session, demanding the need for a comprehensive discussion. The SGPC had cited leadership inadequacies and inconsistencies in unifying the Panth as reasons behind the dismissal of Giani Raghbir Singh and Giani Sultan Singh, among others.
The removals include several high-profile clerics from prestigious Sikh institutions, including the Akal Takht. SAD MLA Manpreet Singh Ayali strongly condemned the SGPC's actions and advocated for developing a consensus framework involving Sikh organizations to protect religious institutions from political influences.
