UN Confirms Safety of Personnel Amid India-Pakistan Tensions

The United Nations confirms the safety of its peacekeeping personnel following military strikes by India targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan. This action, named Operation Sindoor, was in response to an earlier terror attack. The UN urges maximum military restraint from both India and Pakistan to prevent further escalation.

The United Nations has confirmed that its peacekeeping personnel in the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan, known as UNMOGIP, are safe following a series of military strikes conducted by India. These operations targeted what India described as terror infrastructure located in Pakistan.

The Indian military launched the strikes, dubbed Operation Sindoor, in response to a terror attack that claimed 26 lives in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam area. The strikes were carried out in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Pakistan's Punjab province. In retaliation, Pakistan's army launched artillery and mortar shelling, resulting in casualties and injuries.

Stephanie Tremblay, an Associate Spokesperson for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, emphasized that all UN personnel were accounted for and unharmed. The UN continues to advocate for restraint from both nations to avoid a potential military conflict, underscoring the critical importance of maintaining peace in the region.
