The custodial death of temple security guard Ajithkumar in Tamil Nadu's Sivaganga district has ignited widespread demands for a CBI probe. Despite the government's attempts to address the issue by suspending officers and initiating investigations, the opposition accuses it of ineffectiveness.
The Madras High Court has appointed an Enquiry Officer, with the case drawing condemnation from across the political spectrum. AIADMK and other parties have demanded a CBI inquiry, citing a lack of faith in the state police.
The government has transferred key officials and arrested five policemen. The incident has also caught the attention of human rights activists who insist on a transparent investigation. CM Stalin is under fire for what opposition claims is merely a theatrical response.
