Former Shiv Sena corporator Kamlesh Rai has been taken into custody for allegedly extorting Rs 5 lakh from a builder in Mumbai's Andheri area, a police official reported. The allegation highlights the ongoing issue of corruption in the construction sector.
Rai had originally demanded an extortion sum of Rs 50 lakh from the builder engaged in a project in the Andheri MIDC area. After negotiations, the amount was reduced to Rs 35 lakh, out of which Rs 8 lakh had been paid previously.
The former corporator was arrested while collecting an installment of Rs 5 lakh. Police investigations are currently underway to gather more details about the case.
