In a tumultuous session marked by protests, Parliament on Wednesday approved The Carriage of Goods by Sea Bill 2025. Opposition members voiced objections and called for debates on unrelated issues, but the bill was eventually passed. The legislation aims to update century-old laws governing maritime goods transportation.
Opposition figures, including Neeraj Dangi and Haris Beeran, criticized the lack of discussion on the Special Intensive Revision issue, while Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge demanded equal rules for both sides of the aisle. Treasury members, led by BJP's Sanjay Seth, accused the opposition of stalling progress.
Minister Shantanu Thakur emphasized the bill's role in replacing outdated laws and promoting business friendliness. Despite requests for detailed consideration, the opposition's demand for division voting was unmet due to absent MPs, leading to the bill's approval via voice vote.
