India-ILO Pact to Boost Global Employment Opportunities

The Indian government has signed an initial pact with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to develop an 'International Reference Classification of Occupations', aiming to facilitate global employment opportunities for youth. This collaboration addresses skill shortages and supports managed, skills-based migration pathways, enhancing data comparability and mutual skill recognition.

The Indian government has formed an initial agreement with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) focusing on the advancement of an 'International Reference Classification of Occupations'. This will aid the youth in securing global employment, according to a statement by the Labour Ministry on Tuesday.

At a virtual event, Labour and Employment and Youth Affairs & Sports Minister, Mansukh Mandaviya, participated in signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the ILO to collaborate on this project. The partnership aims to tackle significant skill shortages prompted by demographic changes and digitalization.

G20 leaders at the 2023 summit, during India's presidency, committed to improving skill-based migration pathways, endorsing the development of international classification in occupations. The MoU, according to ILO Director General Gilbert F Houngbo, has a profound global impact and could potentially lead to wider collaboration in enhancing workforce mobility and social protection.
