Revamping Electoral Rolls: A Step Toward Error-Free Voter Lists

The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls is set to remove deceased voters, as seen in Bihar. By linking death registration data with electoral systems, the Election Commission aims to update voter lists efficiently and eliminate long-standing errors.

The Election Commission is pioneering a comprehensive nationwide Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls to tackle the perennial issue of erroneous voter lists, reflecting a trend recently seen in Bihar. There, nearly 65 lakh outdated entries, including 22 lakh deceased voters, were excised.

Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar highlighted that failures in past enumeration led to inaccuracies in Bihar's rolls until this robust exercise was implemented. By linking registrar data with poll systems, officials aim to resolve these discrepancies permanently.

Emphasizing efficiency, the Election Commission plans to electronically access death data from the Registrar General of India, ensuring electoral registration officers swiftly and accurately update lists, fulfilling a long-sought goal of producing error-free electoral rolls.
