A 62-year-old man was detained in Kakinada for allegedly raping a minor girl, authorities confirmed on Wednesday. The accused, T Narayana Rao, reportedly impersonated the girl's grandfather to take her from her hostel, committing the crime in an orchard.
Kakinada district superintendent of police, Bindu Madhav Garikapati, underlined that the girl's consent is irrelevant due to her minor status, classifying the crime under the POCSO Act. A viral video of the incident, captured by the orchard owner, triggered police action despite no initial complaint from the owner.
Both the suspect and the victim are from the same community in Tuni town. The police are deliberating whether to charge the orchard owner for making the video public rather than reporting it first. An additional video showing Rao being assaulted by the girl's family also circulated widely.
