In a diplomatic move, Iran has expressed approval of the conditional release of Mahdieh Esfandiari, an Iranian student previously held in a French prison. The announcement was made by Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei on Wednesday.
Esfandiari, an Iranian student who resides in Lyon, France, was detained earlier this year due to her allegedly anti-Israel postings on social media. Iran has criticized France for what it describes as the arbitrary detention of the student.
Despite her conditional release, Tehran is pushing for her full liberation and continues to pressure French authorities. This situation adds another layer of complexity to the already tense relations between the two countries.
