Tai-Ahom Community Demands Scheduled Tribe Status with Torchlight Protest

The Tai-Ahom community in Assam staged a torchlight protest demanding Scheduled Tribe status, threatening to boycott the BJP for unfulfilled promises. These protests emphasize longstanding socio-economic issues faced by various communities in the region, with similar demonstrations by the Tea-Tribes and Motok communities pressing for ST status.

Thousands of Tai-Ahom community members took to the streets of Charaideo district in Assam, staging a torchlight protest demanding immediate inclusion in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.

The protest, led by prominent organizations like the Tai Ahom Yuba Parishad and the All Tai Ahom Students' Union, saw a vast turnout as demonstrators marched through Moran town to the Ushanagar playground, chanting slogans such as 'No ST, No Rest'.

TAYPA president Diganta Tamuly issued a stern warning, stating that the community may boycott the BJP in the 2026 assembly polls if their demand continues to be unmet. Their call adds to the ongoing demands from other regional communities, with Assam's Chief Minister indicating a forthcoming report on this matter in the assembly.
