U.N. Resolution: A Milestone on the Path to Gaza Peace
Palestinian Foreign Minister Varlen Aghabekian Shahin discusses the U.N. Security Council's resolution endorsing the U.S. plan to end Gaza's conflict. Shahin describes it as the initial step toward peace, highlighting the need for a ceasefire. The resolution also authorizes a multinational security force in Gaza.
The United Nations Security Council has adopted a resolution supporting President Donald Trump's initiative to end the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Palestinian Foreign Minister Varsen Aghabekian Shahin hailed this development as a necessary first step on the path to peace in the region.
The resolution, which was drafted by the U.S., authorizes the deployment of an international security force to Gaza and establishes a Board of Peace to oversee the area's reconstruction and economic rejuvenation. Shahin emphasized in Manila that progress can't occur without an initial ceasefire.
Despite support for the resolution, challenges remain. The Palestinian Authority and other stakeholders stress the importance of addressing Palestinian self-determination and independence in accordance with international law, though the U.S. plan suggests these will come only after necessary reforms by the Palestinian Authority.
