In West Bengal, Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari has brought serious allegations against the state administration, accusing them of manipulating the electoral rolls. Adhikari claims that senior officials are intentionally retaining ineligible names, including Bangladeshi infiltrators, deceased individuals, and duplicate entries during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
The Election Commission has taken steps to address these claims by appointing retired IAS officer Subrata Gupta as the Special Roll Observer for the SIR in the state. Additionally, 12 IAS officers have been designated as 'Electoral Roll Observers' to oversee and guide the roll preparation process, aiding district election officers and electoral registration officers in implementing corrective actions.
The controversy comes amid heightened political activity in West Bengal, with the BJP organizing rallies as part of their 'Parivartan Yatra' campaign. The party criticizes the ruling Trinamool Congress for alleged misgovernance and appeasement politics, promising change and a 'double-engine government' in the 2026 assembly polls.
