Crackdown in Tunis: The Arrest of Chaima Issa and a Nation's Outcry
Tunisian police arrested opposition figure Chaima Issa at a protest in Tunis, enforcing a 20-year sentence. An appeals court convicted over 40 opposition leaders and others on charges of conspiracy against President Kais Saied's rule. Rights groups condemn the sentences as a crackdown on dissent.
In a significant development highlighting Tunisia's political tensions, the police have arrested Chaima Issa, a prominent opposition figure, during a protest in the capital, Tunis. The arrest follows a court ruling on Friday that saw leaders across opposition and business sectors handed lengthy prison sentences of up to 45 years.
Describing the charges as unjust, Issa urged Tunisians to continue their fight against tyranny and emphasized the political nature of her arrest. Her detainment comes amid growing criticism of President Kais Saied's increasingly authoritarian governance since his consolidation of power in 2021.
Further arrests are anticipated, including Najib Chebbi, head of the opposition National Salvation Front. Rights organizations have condemned these actions, calling for the sentences to be annulled. With over 40 individuals charged and 20 sentenced in absentia, the case marks one of Tunisia's largest political prosecutions to date.
