Congress MP Shashi Tharoor has taken a significant step towards enhancing India's legal framework by introducing a private member's bill aimed at criminalising marital rape. Bolstering the call for justice, Tharoor pointed out the urgent need for reforms, stressing that consent remains fundamental within marriage.
In addition to the marital rape bill, Tharoor has put forward two other significant pieces of legislation. One seeks to amend the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 2020, highlighting the critical issue of overwork and mental health risks among Indian professionals. Tharoor detailed the tragic consequences of excessive work hours and the necessity for legal protections.
Another bill proposes the establishment of a permanent States and Union Territories Reorganisation Commission. According to Tharoor, this initiative is crucial for ensuring that state creation and alteration are guided by data, objective reasoning, and national unity, thereby promoting informed decision-making.
