A station house officer (SHO) allegedly took his life by shooting himself with his service revolver, local officials reported on Saturday.

Identified as Arun Kumar Rai, aged 48, he served at Kuthaund police station. The event transpired at about 9:30 p.m. on Friday at his residence within the police station premises, according to authorities.

Superintendent of Police Durgesh Kumar stated that when the gunshot was heard, police station personnel rushed to the scene to find Rai critically injured. He was first taken to a local health center, then to the medical college in Orai, but succumbed to his injuries at around 11:30 p.m.

Kumar indicated the incident appears to be a suicide, with investigations ongoing to confirm the particulars. Rai, a native of Sant Kabir Nagar district, was in service since 1998 and had just been promoted to inspector in 2023.

Family members have been informed, and Rai's body has been sent for an autopsy. On hearing the news, District Magistrate Rajesh Kumar Pandey, alongside senior police officials, visited the medical college.
