The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday addressed the ongoing legal dispute regarding the Thirupparankundram hilltop stone pillar, known as 'deepathoon'. Controversy has arisen with three differing accounts of the pillar's historical and religious significance presented in court.

The hearing, led by Justice G Jayachandran, witnessed disruptions as an advocate attempted to intervene, leading to court-enforced removal. The case revolves around a previous order permitting the lighting of Karthigai deepam on the hill, an area claimed by different religious factions.

Representatives from the TN Wakf Board and Hindu devotees offered competing historical narratives, with references to early 20th-century documentation. The court has now requested the Archaeological Survey of India's input, with further arguments slated for continuation.
