In a recent flare-up in the South China Sea, China's defense ministry on Wednesday accused the Philippines of distorting facts concerning an incident between the Chinese coast guard and Filipino fishermen. The confrontation occurred near the Sabina Shoal, where tensions frequently simmer over contested waters.
The Philippine coast guard reported injuries to three fishermen and damage to two vessels when Chinese coast guard ships allegedly cut anchor lines and used water cannons. These claims have been steadfastly denied by China, which maintains its actions were 'reasonable and lawful.'
Beijing's defense ministry pledged to take 'strong and effective measures' against any perceived infringements or provocations in the region. The Philippine Embassy in Beijing and the defense ministry have not yet responded to requests for comment from Reuters regarding the episode.
