The Kerala government has taken a significant step by expanding the Other Backward Classes (OBC) list to include several communities, including Balija. This decision, influenced by a recommendation from the State Commission for Backward Classes, was made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.
The inclusion will bring Balija, Kavarai, Gavara, Gavarai, Gavarai Naidu, Balija Naidu, Gajalu Balija, and Valai Chetty communities under the OBC category in the state. The announcement was confirmed in a statement from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO).
To implement these changes, the Kerala State and Subordinate Services Rules, 1958, will be amended. This includes a revision to Part I, Schedule III of the rules, specifically altering item number 49B to reflect the updated classification.
