Minister for Trade and Investment and Minister of Agriculture Todd McClay has announced the appointment of Nathan Guy as New Zealand’s next Special Agricultural Trade Envoy (SATE), a key role supporting the Government’s strategy to strengthen global agricultural relationships and boost export performance.

Guy will begin his appointment on 1 January 2026, replacing Hamish Marr, who has held the role since 2023.

Strengthening NZ’s Agricultural Voice Abroad

The SATE position plays a central role in ensuring New Zealand’s trading partners understand the country’s agriculture and primary production systems, including sustainability practices, animal welfare standards, and environmental stewardship.

The envoy also acts as an international advocate for New Zealand’s food and fibre exporters at a time when global competition, shifting regulations, and trade negotiations require strong representation.

Minister McClay said the appointment aligns with the Government’s ambition to double New Zealand’s export value within 10 years.

Focus on India and GCC Markets

Nathan Guy has been asked to put particular emphasis on India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) markets—two regions where New Zealand is seeking expanded trade opportunities and potential free trade agreements.

“Nathan Guy’s immediate priorities will be to advocate for New Zealand’s primary production interests from the perspective of a practising farmer,” McClay said.“I have asked Mr Guy to show particular focus on India and GCC markets, to leverage the opportunities that trade agreements with these countries would present.”

An Experienced Leader in Agriculture and Trade

Guy is a dairy farmer, agribusiness leader, and former Minister for Primary Industries, bringing significant real-world and political expertise to the role. He currently serves as:

  • Chairman, Meat Industry Association (MIA)

  • Independent Chair, Apiculture New Zealand

He has long been a prominent advocate for New Zealand’s export sectors, working to promote market access, defend NZ’s reputation overseas, and support the growth of high-value primary industries.

McClay said Guy’s combined experience as a farmer and former minister makes him “uniquely well placed to tell the story of New Zealand’s primary production sector to the world.”

Acknowledging the Outgoing Envoy

The Minister also thanked Hamish Marr for his contribution since 2023, noting his success in building trust with key partners.

“Hamish has made an outstanding contribution to New Zealand’s agricultural trade interests. He has been highly effective in conveying the message that New Zealand agriculture is not a threat to others but complements our partners to our mutual advantage.”

Guy’s appointment is expected to support New Zealand’s efforts to secure new markets, deepen export relationships, and strengthen the global competitiveness of the country’s food and fibre sector.
