Mumbai is set to have a Mahayuti mayor, according to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, who dismissed recent chatter about emerging political dynamics after last week's civic poll results. Shinde confirmed that mayors from the Mahayuti alliance, comprising Shiv Sena and BJP, would lead in municipalities where they had jointly fought elections.
Cutting through the rumors, Shinde emphasized that the Shiv Sena would adhere to decisions respecting the people's verdict. His statement comes amidst reports of 29 Shiv Sena corporators-elect moving to a Mumbai hotel after the coalition secured a slender majority in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Speculation arises around Shinde's desire to secure the BMC mayoral post for Shiv Sena for at least two-and-a-half years as a tribute during party founder Bal Thackeray's birth centenary year. Officially, Shiv Sena claims the newly elected members were relocated for a workshop to familiarize them with the nation's wealthiest civic body after the party claimed 65 seats behind BJP's 89.
