The coast guard discovered a dingy carrying migrants toward Chios and instructed them to turn back. According to officials, the smugglers then maneuvered towards the coast guard vessel, leading to the fatal collision.
While 25 migrants were rescued, one woman later died, and an ongoing search is in place. Scrutiny surrounds Greece's handling of migrants, amid past allegations of improper conduct by authorities.
