Under pressure from a Supreme Court-mandated deadline, Madhya Pradesh Minister Vijay Shah expressed remorse for making controversial remarks about Colonel Sofia Qureshi. Shah, speaking to reporters, emphasized that his comments were made in a moment of 'patriotic excitement' and were not intended to disrespect any individual or group.
The Supreme Court had recently instructed the state to determine within two weeks whether to sanction Shah's prosecution for his remarks about Qureshi, leading to demands from the Congress Party for Shah's resignation or removal from the cabinet. Shah's comments, made during a public event and caught on video, have generated significant public and political backlash.
Following the backlash, Shah has repeatedly apologized, acknowledging the 'painful' nature of the controversy and asserting his respect for the Indian Army. He vowed to maintain decorum in public discourse and promised to introspect and control his speech in the future, aiming to prevent similar incidents.
