Los Angeles Lakers center Deandre Ayton faced a brief detention at Lynden Pindling International Airport in the Bahamas on Tuesday, reportedly due to suspicions of marijuana possession. Ayton's lawyer and sources confirmed to Reuters he was briefly held but not arrested.
Attorney Devard Francis stated that the marijuana was not in Ayton's bag, leading to his prompt release. However, Ayton's association with the incident has sparked discussions due to its timing, especially since the Bahamas is amid adjustments to its marijuana legislation.
The Royal Bahamas Police Force and the Lakers remained silent on the incident. Deandre Ayton, a former top draft pick, joined the Lakers last summer, missing recent games during this unforeseen circumstance.
