Officials reported seizing over 500 quintals of the wood, valued at more than Rs 50 lakh, from a site in Punjab and arresting three individuals in connection with the operation.

The bust, named 'Operation Khair,' marks a significant achievement for the forest department, which employed a combination of technology and electronic surveillance to trace and intercept vehicles transporting the illegal cargo across state borders. The operation underscores the high commercial value of khair wood, used to produce 'kattha,' a crucial ingredient in pan masala.

The divisional forest officer, Pranav Jain, revealed that the operation required meticulous tracking over several days and relied heavily on informer tips and technological methods. He stated that the department's focus extended beyond local seizures to understanding the broader smuggling network and destination paths. The investigation is ongoing, with efforts to identify further network members and local accomplices.
