The Bombay High Court has sternly criticized the Maharashtra government for a 'large and systemic failure' in handling land acquisition matters, highlighting the prolonged deprivation of compensation to landowners. The court insists on a 'mission-mode' approach to rectify these long-standing issues.
A bench from the Aurangabad segment of the court, comprising Justices Vibha Kankanwadi and Hiten Venegavkar, described the persistence of unfinished acquisition proceedings as a breach of constitutional duty. Many affected individuals, primarily agriculturists and illiterate landowners, remain unaware of their right to compensation.
The court highlighted that the prolonged delay exacerbates financial burdens on the public exchequer and called for the establishment of a dedicated administrative body to expedite pending cases. The Maharashtra chief secretary is tasked with overseeing the resolution process, emphasizing accountability and timely intervention.
