Supreme Court Dismisses PIL on Assam Electoral Roll Revision

The Supreme Court rejected a PIL demanding a special intensive revision (SIR) of Assam's electoral rolls. The bench noted the electoral roll was already finalized, making the petition infructuous. The plea sought an SIR similar to one in Bihar and questioned the exclusion of Aadhaar as a document.

The Supreme Court on Thursday declined to hear a public interest litigation (PIL) demanding a special intensive revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls in Assam, which is preparing for upcoming polls.

Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and his bench underscored that the electoral rolls for Assam were already finalized, thus rendering the plea redundant. The PIL challenged the Election Commission's shift from Assam's standard Special Revision to a full-scale SIR conducted in other states.

The petitioner argued that an intensive revision was essential to uphold the integrity of Assam's electoral rolls. The bench, however, maintained the final rolls were published on February 10, and emphasized the need for care under the existing legislative framework when dealing with issues of nationality and citizenship identification.
