In a significant legal development, a Delhi court has acquitted notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi and two associates of extortion allegations. The judgment, delivered by Chief Judicial Magistrate Nupur Gupta, cited a lack of sufficient evidence as the primary reason for the acquittal.
The case involved an alleged Rs 1 crore extortion attempt from complainant Raman Deep Singh, who claimed to have received threatening calls in April 2023. However, the court observed that the prosecution did not provide evidence of any 'overt act' by the accused that put the complainant in fear of death or grievous harm.
The judge also criticized the investigation, pointing out a reliance on the co-accused's disclosure statements without corroborating evidence, such as call records. As a result, the accused were ordered to be discharged upon furnishing bail bonds.
