Curfew Eased in Meghalaya Amid Unrest

Amid unrest in Meghalaya, curfew was partially relaxed in two districts to allow purchase of essentials. Clashes during election nominations led to deadly violence and property damage. Authorities postponed upcoming elections and enforced curfew, urging residents to maintain peace as situation remains tense but under control.

Relaxation of curfew was observed in parts of Meghalaya's conflict-ridden areas on Friday, as authorities aimed to provide essential access to commodities amidst ongoing unrest. In West Garo Hills, a four-hour window from 9 am to 1 pm was granted, while in East Garo Hills, the curfew was eased from 8 am to 5 pm, according to officials.

This decision followed severe clashes earlier in the week between tribal and non-tribal groups linked to the nomination process for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) elections. The violence resulted in two fatalities from police firing and extensive property damage. Reports of arson, vandalism, and looting in Tura town compelled authorities to impose a curfew and involve the Army to prevent further disturbances.

The state government subsequently postponed the GHADC elections, initially set for April 10. Current conditions are tense, but under security control. Residents are advised to maintain calm and avoid any actions that might disrupt public order. Legal enforcement has been instructed to address violations during this sensitive period.
