The Meghalaya government has reinstated internet services across Garo Hills, signalling a return to normalcy after recent violent clashes disrupted the region. The suspension, which affected all five districts, was initially a response to deadly unrest over tribal council election disputes.
Officials confirmed that the unrest stemmed from a controversial notification by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC), which excluded non-tribals from participating in tribal council elections. This led to several violent incidents, including clashes and vandalism, prompting the government to temporarily suspend internet services.
Authorities, after reviewing the improved law and order situation, decided to lift the ban to aid residents, businesses, and institutions. Meanwhile, law enforcement continues investigating the violence, having already made several arrests, and more may follow as the situation stabilizes.
