UNRWA Faces Viability Crisis Amidst Political Tumult
The outgoing head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees warns of its potential collapse, following funding challenges and geopolitical tensions. If funding falls through, Israel may assume responsibility for humanitarian efforts in Gaza. The UN agency's situation highlights significant political and security challenges in the region.
The head of the UN's Palestinian refugee agency has issued a stark warning about the agency's viability, according to a letter revealed on Friday. Philippe Lazzarini, the outgoing chief, stated that any collapse could lead to Israel taking over humanitarian tasks in Gaza, raising concerns about political stability.
Lazzarini's letter, dated March 17, described how UNRWA's position is precarious, due to repeated Israeli raids and the deaths of numerous staff members during recent conflicts. He criticized the lack of international support, asserting Palestinian refugees are being unfairly burdened.
Amid accusations of bias and legislative bans from Israel, UNRWA has faced funding issues, particularly following the US freezing contributions. Lazzarini emphasizes that without immediate support, Israel might inherit responsibilities for Palestinians in occupied areas, posing risks of regional instability.
