Fraudsters Exploit Fear, Posing as CBI to Swindle Rs 71 Lakh

A cyber scam in Maharashtra's Thane district saw fraudsters impersonating CBI officers and swindling Rs 71.1 lakh from a man. They threatened him with false harassment charges unless he paid up. The deception was uncovered when the man's wife questioned the legitimacy of the accusations and the documents provided.

In a disturbing case of cybercrime in Maharashtra's Thane district, fraudsters impersonated CBI officers to swindle Rs 71.1 lakh from a 42-year-old resident. The victim, hailing from Dombivli, was threatened with false charges of harassment unless he paid the fraudulent fines.

Posing initially as a representative from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the conmen accused the victim of sending abusive messages. They then escalated the ruse, involving supposed investigations by the Enforcement Directorate and presented fake Supreme Court documents to convince the victim of their legitimacy.

The fraud unraveled when the victim's wife scrutinized the details, exposing the deception. The Tilak Nagar police station is now investigating the case under relevant IT Act provisions, seeking to bring the perpetrators to justice.
