UN Experts Condemn Deadly Strikes on Lebanon, Warn of Escalating Regional Crisis and Possible War Crimes
In a sharply worded statement, the UN experts accused Israel of showing “utmost contempt” for international legal norms, diplomacy, and civilian lives.
A group of United Nations independent experts has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s recent military actions in Lebanon, describing a large-scale wave of airstrikes on 8 April as a serious breach of international law, a threat to regional stability, and a major setback for diplomatic efforts aimed at de-escalation in the Middle East.
The strikes—launched just hours after a ceasefire agreement was reportedly brokered by Pakistan between the United States and Iran—have intensified concerns that the region may be moving closer to a broader conflict.
“Utmost Contempt” for International Law and Diplomacy
In a sharply worded statement, the UN experts accused Israel of showing “utmost contempt” for international legal norms, diplomacy, and civilian lives.
According to the experts, the timing of the strikes—coinciding with a newly announced ceasefire framework—undermines ongoing efforts to stabilise the region.
“This is not self-defence. It is a blatant violation of the UN Charter and a deliberate destruction of prospects for peace,” the experts said.
They warned that the fragile ceasefire environment, already strained by limited progress in recent negotiations, now faces further erosion.
масштабные Strikes and Civilian Impact
The 10-minute aerial assault reportedly targeted more than 150 locations across Lebanon, marking one of the most intense bombardments in decades.
Preliminary figures indicate:
-
At least 303 people killed
-
Over 1,150 injured
-
Hundreds still missing under rubble
Many of the strikes hit densely populated residential and commercial areas, including parts of central Beirut—raising serious concerns about compliance with international humanitarian law, particularly the principles of:
-
Distinction (between civilian and military targets)
-
Proportionality
-
Precaution in attack
Environmental Damage Adds to Crisis
Beyond human casualties, the attacks have caused significant environmental harm, including:
-
Release of toxic pollutants into the air
-
Contamination of water systems
-
Destruction of ecosystems due to fires and debris
Experts warn that such damage could have long-term public health and ecological consequences, compounding the humanitarian crisis.
A Worsening Humanitarian Emergency
The strikes come amid an already severe crisis in Lebanon, where violence has escalated sharply since early March.
According to Lebanese authorities:
-
More than 2,000 people killed since 2 March
-
6,588 injured
-
Over 1 million displaced—approximately 20% of the population
Among the displaced:
-
Around 140,000 people are sheltering in overcrowded facilities
-
Many include vulnerable groups such as women, children, the elderly, and persons with disabilities
The pace of displacement has been described as faster than during the 2024 escalation, highlighting the scale and urgency of the crisis.
Allegations of “Domicide” and Forced Displacement
The UN experts raised alarm over what they described as a pattern of “domicide”—the systematic destruction of homes to make return impossible.
They warned that:
-
Blanket evacuation orders
-
Widespread destruction of residential areas
may constitute collective punishment and could amount to ethnic cleansing, particularly in heavily affected regions of southern Lebanon.
“Forced displacement of civilians is a war crime and may constitute crimes against humanity,” the experts stated.
Broader Regional Risks and US Involvement
The situation is further complicated by rising regional tensions. The experts also criticised the United States’ imposition of a naval blockade, describing it as an “act of war” that risks further destabilising the region.
Despite the ceasefire announcement between the US and Iran, the lack of concrete progress in negotiations has left the situation highly volatile.
Condemnation of Cross-Border Attacks
While focusing on Israeli actions, the UN experts also condemned Hezbollah’s cross-border attacks against Israeli civilians, urging all parties to adhere to the 2024 ceasefire agreement under UN Security Council Resolution 1701.
Urgent Calls for International Action
The experts issued a series of urgent recommendations to prevent further escalation:
-
Immediate cessation of Israeli military operations in Lebanon
-
Full compliance with ceasefire agreements and international law
-
Withdrawal of forces and facilitation of safe return for displaced civilians
-
US intervention to halt attacks on civilian infrastructure
-
Suspension of arms transfers to Israel amid credible allegations of violations
-
Increased international funding for Lebanon’s humanitarian response, including a $308 million emergency appeal
A Region on the Brink
The latest developments underscore the growing fragility of the Middle East security landscape, where overlapping conflicts and geopolitical rivalries risk triggering a wider regional crisis.
With civilian casualties mounting, displacement accelerating, and diplomatic efforts faltering, the international community faces mounting pressure to act decisively.
The UN experts’ message is unequivocal: without immediate intervention and renewed commitment to international law, the conflict risks spiralling into a far-reaching humanitarian and geopolitical catastrophe.
