Consensus over Conflict: Chhandoh's Unique Panchayat Selection

In a rare move, Chhandoh panchayat in Himachal Pradesh selected its local leaders through mutual consent instead of polling. Headed by former pradhan Mehar Singh, the villagers selected Subhash Ranaut as pradhan, Baljit Kashyap as his deputy, and five ward members without any vote casting.

This novel approach may set a new precedent, with future honors likely post-election. The elections deadline for over 3,600 local bodies has been extended to May 31 by the Supreme Court due to logistical challenges.
