Union Minister Bandi Sanjay Kumar has accused the Congress party and the INDIA bloc of a 'historic betrayal' against southern states. The contention revolves around the rejection of the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill intended to safeguard southern states' parliamentary representation after the completion of the 2026 census.

Kumar criticized the opposition for blocking the bill, which he argues would defend the South's political interests once seat redistribution begins based on population, potentially disadvantaging states that have controlled population growth and developed robust education and infrastructure.

Despite Home Minister Amit Shah's assurances about increasing southern seats, the bill's defeat on Friday marks a significant political setback, also stalling proposals for women's legislative reservations and expanding Lok Sabha seats.
